Magazine Layout
I was excited about this project as I wanted to incorporate two things I was truly passionate about, my sorority and Israel. Fortunately, I took a picture of myself "throwing it up" (making my sororities letters with my fingers) after hiking up Masada (the site of the Yom Kippur War) at sunrise. In that image you can see what it looked like from the top of the mountain and the beautiful sunrise and terrain bellow. Upon traveling to Israel, I was able to meet sorority sisters from across America in a place that means so much to me, on a free trip to Israel. Birthright gives every Jewish teenager the ability to travel to Israel for 10 days for free. This trip is intended to spark interest in the minds of college students to go to Israel and fall in love and support the place their ancestors dreamed of going to.
My sorority upholds the morals of many of the standards I hold myself to. I am passionate about finding other women who share these morals and understand the process of going through recruitment. Being able to encompass both of these, using programs that I now understand to complete this project was really cool.
I now have a better understanding of the programs used in class and cannot wait to use them in my career in the future.
Beer Labels
For this projected we were intrusted to utilize an aspect of Art Nouveau in our beer label.
Art Nouveau is a style of art prominent in Western Europe is the late 1800s. It is based around linear designs and flowing curves.
When attempting to utilize this in a beer label, I recognized that I wanted to use a Greek goddess and utilize the long flowing hair and the traditional leaves connotative with a Greek goddess. Once again using the stylist was extremely helpful as I traced a girl dressed as a Greek goddess for the middle image. I used illustrator as I like the layout better than Photoshop and felt I would have more control over the image. I like how it ultimately came out, the simplicity of not using color but using just lines to show the form of my drawing.
Drawing-wise this was one of my favorite projects as I enjoy drawing and it gave me an opportunity to do so while also creating a beer label. I also thought it was interesting to do some research on beer and the new trend with having refillable beer bottles so I wanted to incorporate that in part of the project. Overall I love how this project came out.
Rotoscope
Rotoscoping proved to be the most difficult and time consuming project but the most rewarding project. Figuring out the process and how to make it the best possible series of images was hard in itself but once I got the hang of it, it was easier, but still time consuming. Using the stylist was the only way I remained sane while doing this project and made it a more do-able project. The hardest part of the project for me was perfecting the light sabers and using the colors to my favor, hitting it at the right time and utilizing a gradient to make it realistic.
Exporting the video into iMovie was way more difficult than it should have been as the individual layers initially uploaded, then they were too short and then the colors didn't appear correctly so it took a few tries to be successful. Once all the pieces came together and all my hard work paid off, it was extremely rewarding and almost fun to do the project.
Showing my roommates the project after it was all done who participated in the filming of the video loved how the edits came out and it ended up being one of my best projects.
Multiplicity
Multiplicity was one of my favorite projects of all semester. I am very detailed oriented and really enjoyed photographing and using Photoshop to create this image. Although I initially messed up and didn't correctly use layers and clippings to create this image, one I fixed the document and did it correctly it was really rewarding when it came out seamlessly. Fine-tuning and making the lines seamless was fun and being able to use the eraser and addition tool to the images was interesting. Although a project that may not serve useful later, it was interesting to learn how to do and be able to be a perfectionist about it. As I still look around the edges I find small things I could still fix and ways I can make it that much better.
Photo Restoration
For this project, we were to use photoshop and piece together a photograph that had significant physical damage to the subjects in the photo. Each image I brought in to do did not have enough damage so ultimately I found an image online that had significant damage. Using the clone stamp, patch, healing and smudge tools to restore the images, I struggled with seamlessly fixing the image. Although I was able to fix cracks and some coloring, I was unable to recreate the photo and make it look the absolute best it could be. This proved to be the most frustrating project as I wanted to do well and ultimately couldn't. The background of the image proved to be the hardest aspect of the project as I could not get it back to the quality it once was. I ended up creating my own background that did not enhance the image, if anything it took away some of the small details the image once had.
Propoganda
The propaganda project proved to be the most difficult for me as I got so into the nitty gritty of small details. The week we were assigned the project was the week more uprising (as if there are weeks with minimal uprising) came about and I wanted to do a project I was passionate about. As someone who as been to Israel twice, both for pretty extensive time periods, I feel a deep connection to Israel and to the culture. When you are there, it is easy to get wrapped up in the politics and how each person believes they are right and have the solution to world peace but when you are there, it is hard to believe that a war is going on. Day to day living seems pretty normal and no where out of the ordinary until the "seek cover" alarm goes off and everyone scurries around.
Each aspect of this project was something I was passionate about. I traced a family of those practicing the Muslim faith, a priest and a nun, and a traditional Jewish family, making the sketches somewhat basic and easily able to relate so anyone looking at the image can relate with some aspect of it. I used the Israel flag as the main focus, with the state of Israel fitting inside the jewish star, and the families surrounding the star in the outer white parts. Using doves, a universal sign of peace, and a fig and olive brand, also a universal sign of peace, around it, helps to tie all the pieces together of the absolute need for a peaceful two state solution.
This project was done in adobe illustrator, I program I have learned to love with paint, type and general lines.
I got so caught up in measuring each aspect and getting so into each detail, I forgot why I was creating the piece in the first place. When I finally took a step back and saw it, I realized it was the piece I was most proud of and put the most amount of work in.
Logo's
For the logos assignment, I focused on three different categories: baby clothing, athletic clothing and makeup. The inspiration for each came to me separately but this was a project I became more passionate about as I continued to enhance each logo.
As I watched my guilty pleasure, "Keeping Up With The Kardashians", I saw how Kim was about to have her baby on the episode. It inspired me to want to create a line of baby clothing that was cute and affordable and I came up with the idea of SimplyBaby, putting the S & B together in such a script manor that it created a heart. I liked the simplicity of the design and the functional nature of what the brand described.
In the beginning of that week I was on a huge fitness kick (aka I went to the gym twice that week) and decided that I hated that most workout clothes were either for guys or for girls and none were designed that it could look good on both genders. It started with a simple sneaker that could be wither for a male or female and coming up with the idea WeAthleta, showing both men and women are combating the fight to get healthier. I wanted the W & A of the logo to be intertwined as this was a combined effort. The bumps of the sneakers and letter underneath shows that even know there might be bumps in the road, in the end we are all in this together.
As I thought about what I wanted to do for my last logo, I thought to something I was passionate about. I love experimenting with makeup and the dramatic effects it can have on someone when you put it on or take it off. That week in particular I was working on a look that enhanced my own natural features while still looking more natural than heavy make up. Using the paint-tool and creating the appearance that someone was writing natural with makeup with lipstick and with the bare hand, raw and natural gave the look and the appearance I wanted to.
Although a relatively simple project, this project was one I was most proud of because they were all parts of me that I was passionate about. Each of these logos were completed in adobe illustrator, using the paintbrush tool or the type tool. The most difficult part of using the paintbrush tool was scaling it later
on as the strokes remained the size initially painted on and didn't scale down.
